Well, it turned out that his dad was Robert “Muck” Brown, a real icon in the A-10 community. Well respected and loved by everybody associated with the “Hog”, he and I were close friends who had served together at England AFB, in Louisiana, many years before OEF. At home, I had a photograph of me holding this little boy and my son in front of an A-10 at England AFB when he was four or five years old. I did not recognise him now, as stood in front of me was a 23-year-old grown man. ‘When you are up there and you hear grown men yelling for help on the radio, you never fully realise just how intense the situation on the ground is until one of those involved comes and tells you, “You saved my life”.
I told them that I would have to call them back. Then the CAOC called, telling me that I had to get that aeroplane out of there. At that point I still didn’t know what was wrong as we didn’t have any radios anymore! ‘Well, the problem was that the jet’s refuelling door was not working, and the A-10 could not make it back to Al Jaber without a top off from the tanker. Our maintenance people were telling us it was parts plus twelve hours to fix it. We went back up to the mission planning computers and figured out that if we took all the ordnance off the jet, it could fly to Seeb, in Oman, and refuel on the ground there.
The latter spent his first six weeks in Al Jaber, before switching locations with his commanding officer on 15 October. Afghanistan remained very quiet following Anaconda. Lt Col Thompson would fly 38 night missions prior to leaving Bagram on 11 December, and during this time he employed ordnance twice as much as any other pilot in the squadron – he dropped bombs on just two occasions; ‘The second time I engaged the enemy was on 23 November near Lwara, right up alongside the Pakistani border. A FOB near there had been taking rocket fire, and a ground patrol had the site of the launcher in view.
