Euripides’ Hippolytus 33 from bloodshed, ἁγνὰς . . 55 This latter type of purity is in fact particularly important within the dynamics of the play. Most importantly, Hippolytus’ slightly esoteric adherence to permanent chastity as the expression of his devotion to virginal Artemis becomes the offence against Aphrodite by which the tragic denouement is set in motion: problematically, ‘being chaste’ (ἁγνὸς ὤν) he will ‘greet [Aphrodite] only from afar’ (102).
