Results were disappointing, but a similar scheme was flown later on the Ye-8. After its test program, the Ye-6T/3 was used as a testbed for guided missile launch systems. In the late 1950s many air forces became aware that air bases were vulnerable. Both NATO and the Soviet Union studied jet-lift V/STOL (vertical or short takeoff and landing) as a means of dispersing assets. From late 1960, special attention was paid to enabling the MiG-21 to operate from short unprepared strips. This research led to the jet-lift 23-31 (MiG-21PD).
The skis, of two types, were fitted to the main legs only, and did not retract. One design was almost rectangular with an upturned front. The other was circular with an upturned rim all round, because this pattern was free to rotate. The test program was entrusted to OKB pilot Igor M. Kravtsov, and skis were changed after each flight. The greatest difficulty was encountered in maintaining control while taxiing. The best answer was the KL, wheel/ski arrangement, used on the Su-7BKL. This used a steel ski hardly larger than the wheel, mounted on its own shock struts at a steep noseup angle.
